Thermo-Mechanical Phenomena in High-Speed Billet and Thin-Slab Casting

Thermo-mechanical phenomena during continuous casting of thin steel slabs have been studied using computational models, plant measurements, and metallurgical analysis of cracked samples. Finite element models were calibrated with thermocouple measurements and used to calculate mold heat flux and distortion profiles for elastic-viscoplastic analysis of the solidifying shell. The results reveal the mechanism of mold crack formation, due to thermal fatigue and the effect of mold design on longitudinal cracks, comparing funnel and parallel mold geometries.
